Step 1: Find a book that discusses an issue relevant to the Science community or a book that uses Science as a major part of the plot.
Step 2: Submit a proposal for a Book Executive Summary Project and receive approval.
Step 3: Read the book.
Step 4: Prepare a four-page report including a three page “executive summary” of the book and a one page “evaluation” of the book.
Step 5: Submit your project on time.
Deliverables: Cover page, Approved Proposal, Four page “executive summary” of the book, One page “evaluation” of the book, References page giving a correct APA bibliographic citation.
Fee: Books under 100 pages: $1,000; Books 100-200 pages: $1,500; Books 201-300 pages: $2,000; Books 301 pages or more: $2,500 [Consultant-Based Learning: Dollars Equate to Class Points/Credit]
Other helpful suggestions: You may select a book that deals with environmental issues pertaining and discusses scientific reasoning behind problems and/or solutions. In addition, you may also choose a book written by any well-respected scientist in his/her field. You may choose a book that is fictional and written for entertainment purposes but that uses a lot of Science in descriptions (i.e. Science Fiction).
Submit your book executive summary project proposal and receive approval to be sure that the book is acceptable and related to Science. Be sure to include the number of pages in the Information Gathering section of your proposal.
Depending on the book, you will receive anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 (5 to 10 hours of consulting time). $2,500 is the maximum that will be paid for a book project, but this is a large fee reserved for an especially difficult or exceptionally long book. Books under 100 pages in length pay a fee of $1,000; books 100 to 200 pages in length pay $1,500, books 200 to 300 pages in length pay $2,000; books 300 pages in length or longer or books that are exceptionally difficult pay $2,500.
If you are re-reading a book that you have already read, then, you should charge a lower fee since it will take you less time. You are on your honor to report that you have already read but that you'd like to review it for a book report. You may charge half of what your fee would have been ($1,500 to $1,250).
The executive summary project should be submitted in REPORT form. A book project should include a summary (no more than three pages) and an evaluation of the book (no more than one page). This should be done with the idea that a busy executive would read your review in the evaluation to decide if he/she would like to read it or whether all they want to know is what is in the three-page summary.
To decide what should be in the executive summary report, imagine that your boss, a busy executive, tells you that he/she will be busy at a seminar this weekend and knows that he will need to know what the book is about as people will be discussing it. He/she wants to have a brief idea of what the book is about but does not have time to read the book. He/she would like a concise, three-page report about what is most important and one page discussing your opinion of the book, including your recommendation as to he/she ought to read the book.
Consider that you would want to look good in the eyes of your book. What would you tell him/her about this book?
In your one-page evaluation, tell the reader what you valued, what you learned, realizations, lessons you learned (if any). How has your education or life improved as a result of what you learned from reading the book?
The whole project should not be more than four typed pages. Include a final section with the heading “Reference” and include a proper bibliographical reference for the book.
