Science History Project - Your Birth Year
Overview: Consider how science has changed and evolved over time due to an increase in human knowledge. Analyze science and technology from the year you were born. EITHER research a major scientific discovery that occurred the year you were born OR follow a technological advance as it has changed in the course of your lifetime OR learn about a sciencethics issue that has been in your lifetime or is currently relevant to society. If you do something that is no longer a ‘hot topic,' discuss what is similarly occurring at the present moment in history.
Process:
Step 1: Select format that you would like to follow – a major discovery the year you were born or the advancement in a specific technology since your birth due to scientific research and design.
Step 2: Decide how you would like to present your findings – as a poster, PowerPoint presentation, oral presentation, commercial, brochure, newspaper article, a written summary or a mural.
Step 3: Submit a proposal and include focus of study in the topic description, how you will present your information and where you will collect your data.
Step 4: Perform research on your topic of choice and compile your findings on all major points listed above on a poster, PowerPoint presentation, oral presentation, commercial, brochure, newspaper article, a written summary, a mural, etc.
Step 5: Submit a draft and, if you need to schedule time to present in class, plan a date to be put on the class schedule with the teacher.
Step 6: Submit/ present your project on time.
Deliverables: Cover page, Approved Proposal, Written report 2-3 pages OR a PowerPoint presentation of 7 or more slides OR create a poster that visually and textually captures the important aspects of your element a poster OR a PowerPoint presentation OR an oral presentation – informative or persuasive OR a public service announcement (a commercial) OR a brochure OR a newspaper article OR a written summary OR a mural. References page giving a correct APA bibliographic citation.
Fee: $1,800 [Consultant-Based Learning: Dollars Equate to Class Points/Credit]
Other helpful suggestions: You will study what was going on in the technological world and what continually plagues scientists. Think about technology and science as it has changed over the course of your lifetime. For example, you may consider ONE of the following topics: how cellular phones have changed, hair products, transportation, medicine, trends in science, etc.
On the other hand, you may select a societal issue, such as, how has the cost of gas changed, public transportation, healthcare in the U.S. or another country, cloning, stem cell research, euthanasia, ProLife v. ProChoice, etc.
Brainstorm with people that remember when you were born for ideas. Ask them what they think is the most different since 19??, whenever you were born. Ask them what they remember happening during the time of your birth. Search online for headline news with dates from your birth year in the publications or search periodical reserves at a local library.
