Interview a Scientist
Overview: You may interview a scientist. You may discuss with the scientist the pros and cons of being a scientist.
Process:
Step 1: Choose a scientist with whom you may arrange an interview.
Step 2: Submit a proposal for the interview along with a list of 7-9 proposed questions to ask on the interview and receive approval.
Step 3: Schedule the interview, show up on time with a prepared list of questions to ask the scientist. Interview the scientist.
Step 4: If written, write a professional report on the interview, NOT a transcript of the interview, rather, an analysis of what you learned. If oral, arrange for a time to be put on the class calendar for you to deliver your interview analysis.
Step 5: If oral, give the oral presentation.
Deliverables: Cover page, Approved proposal, Type-written report 2-3 pages long in report form OR an oral summary presentation (about 4 minutes). References page giving a correct APA bibliographic citation.
Fee: $1,200 [Consultant-Based Learning: Dollars Equate to Class Points/Credit]
Other helpful suggestions: You may interview a scientist in any realm. Discuss with the scientist the pros and cons of having studied Science and using it daily. What are the joys and headaches of being a scientist? Do the joys outweigh the problems?
Listen carefully to the scientist's story. How did they get interested in Science? What did they do before they worked as a scientist, what other jobs have they had? What education and experience did the scientist have that prepared them for the Science industry? What other careers either in Science or outside of Science would the scientist have liked to explore? What advise might he/she give to someone interested in having a career in Science?
