Scientific Theory
Overview: Compare and contract various critical theories in science-including that of relativity, the atom, plate tectonics, of evolution and of gravitation. Consider how theories, laws and hypotheses relate.
Process:
Step 1: Commit to project along with a method of delivery and prepare a proposal.
Step 2: Receive approval on proposal and solidify research for approved method of delivery.
Step 3: Be sure to include research for the following theories:
Answer the following in your delivery:
Q1) Why is each considered a theory and not a law?
Q2) What are the hypotheses upon which each is based?
Q3) How have these theories changed as scientists have accumulated more and better data?
Step 4: Gather data, research and analyze data based on answering all three questions above for each theory listed.
Step 5: Each theory should be split equally in terms of discussion.
Step 6: Complete project, edit on own, ask a family member or friend to proof-read and submit to your teacher on time.
Deliverables: Methods may vary. See project submission options. For any method of delivery, include a correct APA bibliographical sources list. An approved proposal. Written reports should be about 3-4 pages typed, double-spaced, 12-point font.
Fee: $1,000-1,400 [Consultant-Based Learning: Dollars Equate to Class Points/Credit]
Other helpful suggestions: Research each theory and make a list of each question to correspond; include references, quotes, page numbers, etc. in your list to organize your data. Create a rough draft on a paper- a drawing, a diagram, a plan, etc. before you get started so you have an idea of where you are going with your project.
Make a table comparing the uses and limitations for each of the three terms: analogies, models and theories. Include its analyses in your introduction/conclusion for increased clarity (+$200).
Project modeled after SUHSD sample assessments, 2004.
